Ohio YLA Middle School Youth & Government Seminars
Youth Leadership Association
YLA seeks to extend a successful middle school civics and leadership program from West Virginia to students in Ohio. Our West Virginia YGS has reached more than 11,000 students from every West Virginia County. YLA’s new Ohio YGS provides Ohio middle school students basic civic education they will not encounter in the classroom until high school. While YLA has programs engaging high school student in active citizenship and leadership, the new Oho middle school Youth & Government Seminars (YGS) will reach students at a key developmental stage where students are forming lifelong personality traits and attitudes towards institutions and society. Involvement in YGS will introduce students to civic content, core civic values and leadership traits while preparing them to become more actively involved in opportunities in high school and beyond. Working with teacher advisors and YLA staff at the school level, students prepare for a three day immersion in the process of state government at the Statehouse. They work with near-peer mentors (high school leaders in YLA high school programs) and engage with civic leaders and government officials in a non-partisan exploration of civics and civic engagement. The Thomas J and Marjorie S Gray Foundation funding we seek will allow YLA to move from the pilot stage to the first year of full implementation of the Ohio YGS program, reaching 10 schools and 100 students. While the grant request is for the first year of the program, YLA has a goal to double student and school participation by year 3.
