Girl Executive Officer in Stark County
Girl Scouts of North East Ohio
Open to new and existing Girl Scouts, the Girl Executive Officer (GEO) program is targeted at girls who have an entrepreneurial spirit. In this program, offered to girls in Summit and Stark County, girls learn the basics of financial literacy. The world’s current economic challenges have made one thing clear: Financial literacy skills matter now more than ever. Girls especially need to learn the basics of money management. A higher percentage of girls are attending college and must find ways to underwrite their college education. Additionally, most women live longer and earn less than men, single women are more likely to become first-time homeowners than single men, and more women are responsible for their own financial self-sufficiency at some point in their lives. Unfortunately, there is a gap when it comes to teaching young people the skills they need. The state of Ohio currently does not require high school students to take a financial literacy course. At Girl Scouts, we hope that the GEO program will provide girls with the opportunity to learn these skills and grow their confidence. We believe that to ensure an economically secure and stable future, it is imperative that all youth are given the opportunity to fully understand how to save and invest their finances responsibly. The GEO program teaches financial literacy through the lens of starting a babysitting business. The curriculum breaks down the planning stages of starting a business, having girls work together to brainstorm business ideas, identify customers, create a financial model, and write up a business plan. Girls learn how to successfully market themselves and their talents, a skill that will benefit them greatly in the future when they’re searching for a career. To date, the majority of enrollees in the GEO program are girls who are often not in a position to partake in more expensive extra-curricular programs offered by other organizations such as the Red Cross. There is no fee for girls to participate in the GEO program. Girls who participate are registered as Girl Scout members for the entire membership year, allowing them access to a variety of other leadership opportunities, including council-sponsored programs as well as summer camp.
