National Youth Leadership Training
Simon Kenton Council, Boy Scouts of America
National Youth Leadership Training is a six-day course for Scouts who have already had some leadership experiences in their troops and are now ready to study advanced leadership skills. Participants must be a First Class Scout or higher rank, age 13 or older, and recommended by their Scoutmaster, or a Venturer with similar camping experience recommended by their unit leader. It is offered in this council three times a year, serving up to 48 Scouts in each session. Developed by Boy Scouts of America using a task force of leadership experts, the curriculum centers on the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. A combination of classroom and practical exercise, the course is taught by a youth-led staff, modeling the best in leadership skills. Drawing from all over Simon Kenton’s 19-county area, participants come together and are put into a troop and patrol outdoor setting. Interconnecting concepts and work processes are introduced early, built upon, and aided by the use of memory aids, which allows participants to understand and employ the leadership skills much faster. The emphasis is on immediate application of learning in a fun environment.
