Scoutreach & TPS/Young Men of Excellence
Boy Scouts of America - Erie Shores Council
In partnership with Toledo Public Schools, the Erie Shores Council is interested in taking a recent pilot program to the next level of service to young men in our community. A couple of years ago, we were approached to provide programming on a periodic basis to about 150-200, 5th-12th grade boys. There are about 6 months of active program throughout the school year. Young Men of Excellence (YMOE) chapters exist at 21 different TPS schools with over 400 members. Each chapter is guided by adult mentors/teachers and meet at their home school on a weekly basis. On a monthly basis, ALL chapters meet together at a common location on a Saturday morning where they break into groups of 25 and rotate through a variety of activities, learning about personal/professional development and exploring higher education. BSA leads team-building activities and discussions regarding leadership and ethical decision making. The partnership is a strong one, but could go deeper if funding was made available. Our goals would be to train the adult leaders/mentors of the YMOE program in the Scouting methods, so that the local school chapter could also transition into a Cub Scout Pack, or, a Boy Scout Troop, following the youth-led patrol method. The youth participants in this program are awesome, but our ability to have a stronger impact is limited by only working with them on a monthly basis.
